One
of the main factors influencing the activity of diving is the public
perception of its safety. The potential negative impact on diving of an
incident wrongly portrayed in the media is large.
Public relation speakers of many organizations including the
media have little or no idea what diving is and diving is
often quoted as a risky activity. Although no statistics of
outdoor activities support such statements it is important to help to
dispel these ideas. One of the tools that can be used is an annual
incident accident report that is publicly accessible. The British Sub
Aqua Club (BSAC) has done this for years. It helps to educate people
about diving as well as give professionals an insight into causes of
incidents. BC Dive Community intends to lobby the members to initiate such a report. |
